Understanding the Flooring Installation Process

A successful flooring installation requires proper preparation to ensure a smooth, efficient process. Whether you’re upgrading your home or business, following these 14 key steps will help you get ready for your new floors.

1. Remove All Breakables

Before the installers arrive, remove all fragile and breakable items from the space. This includes:
Home decor and furniture
Glass light fixtures, mirrors, and artwork
Family photos and window treatments

If it’s hanging on the wall or could get damaged, take it down!

2. Determine Who Moves Furniture & Appliances

Check with your flooring installer to confirm whether furniture and appliances will be moved as part of the installation process. Some providers offer all-inclusive quotes that include:
✔ Moving heavy furniture and appliances
✔ Subfloor preparation and repairs
✔ Complete removal and replacement if needed

Request a detailed estimate to avoid unexpected costs.

3. Disconnect Gas Appliances & Electronics

If flooring is being installed in rooms with gas stoves, washers, or other appliances, you’ll need to disconnect gas and electrical connections. If you’re unsure how to do this safely, hire a professional to avoid risks.

4. Verify the New Floor Height

Changes in floor height may impact door clearance, especially with floating floors, laminate, or luxury vinyl plank (LVP). Ensure that doors open and close smoothly with the new flooring in place.

5. Clear Out Closets & Storage Areas

Don’t forget to empty closets, pantries, and storage spaces where new flooring will be installed. Areas that are often overlooked include:
Coat closets
Laundry rooms & mudrooms
Kitchen pantries

6. Provide Dust Control

Dust can be an issue, especially if sanding is involved. Prevent dust from spreading by:
✔ Covering doorways with plastic sheeting
✔ Sealing air vents and heating ducts
✔ Using a Zip-Wall barrier system for extra protection

7. Remove the Doors

Before installation, remove any doors in the affected areas and store them safely. Place a soft blanket between stacked doors to prevent scratches, and keep hinge pins in a labeled container for easy reinstallation.

8. Remove Baseboards & Trim

Removing baseboards and shoe molding will ensure a cleaner, more professional installation. Depending on your home’s trim style, you may only need to remove the quarter-round molding instead of the entire baseboard.

9. Remove Door Trim for a Seamless Look

To achieve a flawless flooring finish, consider removing the door trim rather than cutting around it. This allows for a tight, professional fit.

If you’re unfamiliar with trim work, discuss this with your installer—some services include trim removal and reinstallation.

10. Thoroughly Clean the Floors

Before installation, clean the subfloor to remove:
Dust, mold, and mildew
Debris and leftover adhesives
Water damage or structural issues

For concrete subfloors, cleaning helps ensure better adhesion and a flawless finish.

11. Prepare the Subfloor

The condition of your subfloor can impact the durability and warranty of your new flooring. Ensure that your subfloor is:
Level and secure to floor joists
Free from moisture, cracks, or dips
Smooth and stable to prevent future damage

If needed, consider adding a thin plywood underlayment for a perfect surface.

12. Maintain the Proper Interior Temperature

Different flooring materials require specific temperature and humidity levels for proper installation. Before installation:
Check the manufacturer’s temperature recommendations
Allow flooring to acclimate (most products need 24-48 hours)
Maintain humidity levels to prevent expansion or shrinkage

13. Set Up a Cutting & Prep Area

If sawing or cutting is required, setting up a designated work area can help keep your home clean. Ideally, the area should have:
A nearby electrical outlet
A hard, stable surface (concrete, patio, or garage floor)
Good lighting for precision cuts

For dust-heavy projects, consider an outdoor cutting station.

14. Secure Your Pets

Flooring installation can be loud and disruptive, which may cause stress or anxiety for pets. To ensure a smooth and safe process:
✔ Keep pets in a separate room
✔ Arrange for pet-sitting if necessary
✔ Consider pet-friendly flooring options, like scratch-resistant luxury vinyl plank (LVP)
